This poster is a B1 sized arcade poster used for promoting "Ridge Racer 2" in Japanese arcades during 1994. Ridge Racer 2 was more of a point release to the original 1993 arcade game. Namco added a network link function for up to 8-players, day and night environment transitions, a rear view mirror and a remixed soundtrack. A very nice set of additions but no new racing levels. Those would arrive later the following year in "Rave Racer" (1995).
The original "Ridge Racer" (1993) was the first texture mapped video game in arcades beating Sega's "Daytona USA" by a full year but Namco had several failed iterations before making it the hit video game it's known for as today. Those failed / incomplete projects were "Eunos Roadster Driving Simulator" (1990) and "Sim Drive" (1992). All reports online indicate those games played like advanced editions of Atari's "Hard Drivin'" (1989).
This would make sense considering how closely Namco and Atari were during the 1980's. They were considered "Sister Companies". Also the evolutionary feel of Ridge Racer reminds me a tiny bit of Hard Drivin'. For Namco and the development of Ridge Racer (1993), third time was the charm!! Good job Namco!
As always thanks for watching my video. I couldn't do it without your support! -The Poster Packrat
